چکیده

Abstract The shovelnose sturgeon ( Scaphirhynchus platorynchus ) and endangered pallid S. albus deposit demersal adhesive eggs in swift currents, near or over coarse substrate. Hydrographic surveys have demonstrated the dynamic nature of spawning habitats that substrates may episodically be buried (partially completely) by fine sediments. To evaluate embryo survival both species various substrate conditions, laboratory trials were conducted with clean glass, gravel, medium-coarse sand (MCS), sand-silt (FSS). Embryos MCS FSS tested three ways: unburied, partially buried, fully (1–2-mm depth). exposed to trial conditions for 10 days from day fertilization (5 beyond expected hatching). For species, mean hatch normally developed free embryos was highest unburied treatments where incubated on not covered sediments ranged 81.0 87.1% 55.2–80.0% sturgeon. Mean normal lowest incubating 2.4 11.6% 4.8–15.2% We observed physical abnormalities all treatments; however, occurrence most variable MCS. Hatch also delayed Our results useful estimate relative suitability relevant river reaches.

Status of knowledge of the Shovelnose Sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus platorynchus,Rafinesque, 1820)

The range of Shovelnose Sturgeon (SVS) Scaphirhynchus pla-torynchus in the great rivers of central North America has contracted, but most remaining populations are considered stable, likely due to a combination of successful harvest regulations and longitudinal continuity of many river reaches, despite damming in upper reaches. The evolutionary relationships of SVS relative to sister taxa is st...

Reproductive Isolation in Sympatric Populations of Pallid and Shovelnose Sturgeon

—Pallid sturgeon Scaphirhynchus albus and shovelnose sturgeon S. platorynchus are recognized morphologically as separate species. A previous genetic study with allozymes was unable to distinguish between the two species or demonstrate their reproductive isolation in regions of sympatry. Our main objective was to measure the genetic variability within and among populations of pallid and shovelno...

Critical Swimming Speed and Behavior of Juvenile Shovelnose Sturgeon and Pallid Sturgeon

The swimming performance of hatchery-reared. juvenile shovelnose sturgeon Scaphirhynchus plarorynchus and pallld sturgeon S. albus was studied in a laboratory swim tunnel at 20°C and 1O0C. The mean 30-min critical swimming speed was not significantly different between species at either temperature (36.9 crd s for shovelnose sturgeon and 35.9 cm/s for pallid utur-geon at 20°C. 19.4 cmls for shov...

Genetic evidence for hybridization of pallid and shovelnose sturgeon.

To determine the genetic origin of individual sturgeon that are morphologically intermediate to pallid (Scaphirhynchus albus) and shovelnose (Scaphirhynchus platorhynchus) sturgeon, we combined previously published mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and microsatellite data with additional microsatellite data. Two sympatric populations of pallid and shovelnose sturgeon from the upper Missouri River and a...
